A Note on December

Just to catch up.

The NaNoWriMo thing was a mixed success and failure. I didn't come close to the required 50,000 words (sorry about that Indy and BSTS), but I did get a jump start on a pretty good little story and I learned quite a bit about my writing style and work ethic in the process. More than anything I learned the value of sticktoitiveness (something I have yet to master). For those of you who followed along, I thank you and I will continue to post my novel as it becomes available.

Secondly, as we herald the arrival of December, we introduce a myriad of advent calendars into our house. It is quite a production to remember all of them and eat all of the chocolate and hang all of the trinkets. I am not sure I understand the whole process, but I am now knee-deep in them so I'd better figure it out.

Lastly, I have been reading a wonderful book entitled, Angle of Repose, by Wallace Stegner and in it he describes what I call the Western sensibility. He says its very different from an Eastern sensibility and he likens it to unaffectedness if that makes any sense. My question today revolves around the idea of sensibility.

Does your area of the world have a different sensibility than anywhere else? Describe it...

congratulations on giving it a try, even though I was looking forward to your purple WINNER line on the NaNo site. Now that Nov. is over, I'll have time to go through and properly read your story though. I did start reading Walter Mitty way back in May, but you ran out of chapters ..... I really was enjoying it though. I like your writing style.

FYI, unfortunately, during rewrites I had to cut out the crazy grandpa from my story. And, it was pure coincidence that the creaky old antique dealer's name is Tom, however, I may have to do some editing and give him a sea cow tattoo. Just for the hell of it, of course. ;-)

Well, you should be proud to have attempted such an endeavor. And I bet you have some excellent rough material to work with. I'm in a novel critique group so unfortunately am up to my eyeballs in reading, but you have tons of writing talent so I'm sure your book will be great!

That book sounds very interesting. I've never read it. Would you recommend it?

I finished NaNo, again, and have realized I'm done with it, and don't need it anymore. Still, I'd encourage others to try it next year.

I'm 35 and I miss having an Advent calendar in my house, and haven't bought one because my favorite aunt usually sends one to me.

However, we are traditionalists - ours don't EVER come with chocolate.
